Description
Dagalbaj Shivaji is a bold, incisive corrective to romanticized accounts of Shivaji Maharaj. Teaching us to view the warrior not as deceptive but diplomatically smart, it challenges deeply ingrained ideas. Though not a comprehensive biography, it acts as a compelling catalyst for deeper historical reflection.
Dagalbaj Shivaji is a concise 39–40 page pamphlet written around 1926 by social reformer Prabodhankar (Keshav Sitaram Thackeray). Its title, which literally means “the diplomat Shivaji,” intentionally challenges common narratives that label Shivaji Maharaj as a traitorous “dagabaj.” Instead, Thackeray celebrates Shivaji’s cunning as diplomatic genius—not deceitful treachery.
